What is a standby generator check?

A standby generator sits outside your home and does nothing for months, then has to work when the power goes out. When you are away, nobody sees it. A standby generator check is a visual look at the generator on each home watch visit, so you know how it looks and that nothing is blocking it before storm season.

We look at the generator and the area around it. We look for leaks, corrosion, visible damage and blocked vents, and we note anything that looks out of place. A photo of the generator goes into your timestamped photo report. If something looks wrong, we call you right away.

This add-on is billed monthly with your home watch plan, so you receive one bill. It is a visual check only, with no test run, servicing or fueling. Servicing, test runs and fueling need your generator technician, and True North does not perform them.

Answers

What do owners ask about a Standby Generator Check?

What does a standby generator check include?

On each home watch visit we visually check your standby generator and the area around it. We look for leaks, corrosion, damage and blocked vents, and we add a photo of the generator to your report. If anything looks out of place, we call you. It is a visual check and does not include servicing or test runs.

How much does a Standby Generator Check cost?

It costs $25 per month. It is a flat monthly add-on to a True North Home Watch plan and is billed along with the plan. Home watch plans start at $110 a month. Servicing, test runs and fueling are not included and are handled by your generator technician, who bills you directly.

Will you test run or service my generator?

No. Servicing, test runs and fueling need your generator technician and are not part of this add-on. We look at the generator and the area around it, and we add a photo to your report. If something looks wrong, we call you and can coordinate your technician with your approval.

Can you tell me my generator will work in a storm?

No. A visual check cannot tell you that a generator will start or run when needed, and True North does not promise any outcome. What you receive is a dated photo and a note on how it looked, plus a call if something looks out of place. Your technician can advise on performance.

How do I get started?

Does it help before hurricane season?

It can help you stay informed. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. A regular visual check gives you a recent photo and a note, so you know how the generator looked and that nothing appeared to block it. For storm visits, ask about our Hurricane Protection services.
